Máscara Contra Máscara (2015)

Archival Digital Pigment Print
40 x 40 in, Edition of 5

Home-made Lucha Libre masks and vintage dresses were involved in commemorating every woman who is fighting the often unseen fight whilst taking her stand as a woman in this world.

In this particular work, process is everything. First, comes the thrifting of authentic vintage dresses from the past. Suhji, then applies a skill that traditionally has always been a woman’s responsibility--sewing--in making one of the most masculine and violent symbols, a wrestling mask, that would go with the dress. From hijabs, wedding veils, to recent beating of Pussy Riot in Sochi, Russia, mask has been and still is playing a significant role in the history of women.

Each home-made mask is photographed on a female model in an environment where the woman is camouflaged with the background. Each final image is a composite of minimum twelve photographs, hence making the model appear small and blended into the surroundings, but surely, the model stands firmly.
