Vacancy is a product of Suhji's way of coping with what was once a tumultuous and significant relationship. It was something she wanted the world to know yet at the same time wanted to hide. Torn between her religious beliefs and surrounding reality, Suhji used seedy motels of California as a symbol of her love and shame. The uncomfortable tension between the subject and the artist is apparent in every image. Their collaborative work lasted two years--and as soon as the project ended, so did their relationship.
